Class Experiment.
When we were doing light painting i felt the group and myself had more freedom than usual, this made learning this project more interesting as we had to learn from our mistakes rather than being told what not to do. i enjoyed working as a class group at first because i felt more confident speaking my ideas to help improve on our images and working on light painting all together at first made us feel more experienced when we were working in smaller groups.
Before we started the task we looked at work from previous years which i though gave the majority of us some inspiration, then we were given the equipment of;
-Black backdrop
-camera
-tripod
-tourch/flash
-small colourful lights
I felt having this equipment made the task slightly easier and some students in the class already knew how to use the camera so we learnt from each other. As much as the small lights for the painting, the tripod and the flash were two very important aspects of the task. The tripod kept the camera still which prevented the images from becoming blurry and ruining the still effect of the model with the moving background. Also, the flash was extremely important and very hard to have accurate, if too much light was produced in the image you wouldn't be able to see the detail of the coloured touches, but if there wasn't enough light you wouldn't see anything.
I learnt a lot about the importance of aperture size and how long images are exposed in this experiment because these are very vital in light painting.
i think the most successful image took took was when i was working in a smaller group, it was a lot quicker to get the photograph ready and because we had already worked out what worked and what didn't it made it easier to produce a better image.

Group light painting
When doing the work as a group, we were in the studio. personally i preferred working there because less light was in the room and i felt it was easier to work in there because everywhere was dark. we were all split into groups of about 5-6 and we all took turns on the camera directing the other people in the group. even though we were all in a set groups, we still all helped other groups with points like how to compose their light and how long the time exposure should be. Because this was our second time working individually it seemed we were slightly more confident in how to work the camera and what works well and what doesn't.
In my image i used the time of 13 seconds, f-stop 8 and ISO 100, i felt this worked really well as the background of my image was pitch black and the main aspect of my image, which was the model and the coloured lights, really stood out. |
